Emergency Message to U.S. Citizens:  Potentially violent demonstration in Athens
February 4, 2012 Athens, Greece

An anarchist collective called “Cycle of Fire,” and other anti-authoritarians, plan to demonstrate in Monastiraki Square around 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 4, 2012.  This will be followed by a march to the Parliament at Syntagma Square.  Please keep in mind that Monastiraki Square is “Tourism Central” here in Athens.  In addition, it is an area criss-crossed by pedestrian streets that has few wide routes from which to exit quickly, should a large crowd gather.

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. Citizens to avoid the Monastiraki and
Syntagma Square areas between 1200 – 1800 hours on Saturday, February 4, 2012. This includes the area around Mitropoleos Street, the main route
between Monastiraki and Syntagma.

Remember, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence without warning.  Avoid areas of demonstrations and, if you are within the vicinity of any demonstrations, remain vigilant and exercise caution.
Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings and local events, monitor local news stations for updates, and report specific incidences of targeted violence to the U.S. Embassy in Athens.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
